AIT
Communtiy Farming

The AIT Community Farm Group – Lake Side location was established in August 2019The present estimated total area of the cultivated land that the group utilizes is 1,100 square meters.

The group started with two plots until later has a total of 11 groups before and during the Covid-19 pandemic with members ranging from one to four members per group. Each group cultivates an average of 100 square meters of land.

Sustainability

  • The community farm is a precursor to the Renewable Energy Technologies for Integrated Community Farming Systems, funded by WISIONs of Sustainability.
  • The project is supervised by Prof. Kumar, fostering the integration of renewable energy technologies into community farming.
  • The initiative led to the establishment of the Community Farm Group at AIT’s Lakeside, driven by passionate farmers such as Arnolfo Diaz, Ernesto Esguera, Vanessa Pham, and Arlene Gonzales.
  • Supported by AIT’s OSC, OAA, OFAM, RRCAP, Youth Energy Academy, and the Mangrove Project.
  • Promotes sustainable and eco-friendly farming practices.

Challenges

  • Challenges encountered in the initial stage included heavy, difficult-to-till soil and water supply issues.
  • Soil consistency improved with the addition of compost to garden plots.
  • Water supply was problematic, especially during the dry season.
  • The watering system issues were addressed with the installation of solar panels, water pumps, and tanks provided by Prof. Kumar and support from the Youth Energy Academy (YEA).

The Mangrove Project

Led by Dr. Oleg Shipin, contributed electrical materials for water pumps and additional water tanks to supplement the water system. The establishment of the Mangrove Museum resulted from AIT's Student Union's Healthy West Lake project in August 2018, which included activities like tree planting and gardening at the West Lake area under the Campus and Environment initiatives.

Farm Community

AIT Community Farm members engage in gardening as a personal hobby, producing crops for self-consumption. Excess produce is offered at reasonable prices to AIT residents through various channels, including the farm's Facebook page and personal sales to visitors.
10% of crop sales contribute to the farm fund, used for equipment maintenance. A fixed monthly fee of THB 50.00 is collected from each member, further contributing to the farm fund.
The farm produces naturally grown crops, averaging 10 kilograms of produce per month, enhancing its marketability
